Kiro
Connect Kiro IDE or Kiro CLI to Ternary using Kiro's MCP configuration. Kiro requires Ternary's OAuth client metadata URL.
Before you start
You need:
- An existing Ternary account
- Access to at least one Ternary tenant
- Kiro configured to allow the Ternary MCP server
Your organization may restrict Kiro to an approved MCP registry.
Step 1: Add Ternary
Open Kiro (the IDE or the CLI uses the same config format). In the IDE, the fastest path is:
- Open the Command Palette.
- macOS: Cmd + Shift + P
- Windows/Linux: Ctrl + Shift + P
- Search for MCP.
- Choose Kiro: Open user MCP config for every workspace, or Kiro: Open workspace MCP config for this project only.
You can also open the Kiro panel and select the Open MCP Config icon.
Kiro stores this in a file:
- Every workspace:
~/.kiro/settings/mcp.jsonin your home folder - This workspace only:
.kiro/settings/mcp.jsonin the project folder
If the file does not exist yet, Kiro creates it. If it already has other MCP servers, add the "ternary" block inside "mcpServers" instead of replacing the whole file.
Paste the configuration for the region where your Ternary tenant is hosted:
{
"mcpServers": {
"ternary": {
"url": "https://core-api.ternary.app/mcp",
"oauth": {
"clientMetadataUrl": "https://core-api.ternary.app/oauth/client-metadata.json"
}
}
}
}{
"mcpServers": {
"ternary": {
"url": "https://core-api.eu.ternary.app/mcp",
"oauth": {
"clientMetadataUrl": "https://core-api.ternary.app/oauth/client-metadata.json"
}
}
}
}Save the file. Kiro reconnects when you save.
Step 2: Authenticate
After you save, Kiro should connect to Ternary and open a browser sign-in page.
If it does not:
- In the IDE, open the Kiro panel, find ternary, and connect or re-authenticate it.
- In the CLI, run
/mcp authand selectternary.
Then:
- Sign in with your existing Ternary credentials.
- Approve the access request.
- Return to Kiro.
Organization-managed registries
Skip this section unless Kiro blocks Ternary with an organization policy.
In that case, ask your Kiro administrator to add Ternary to the company's MCP registry. They can use this entry:
{
"servers": [
{
"server": {
"name": "ternary",
"title": "Ternary",
"description": "Ternary technology-spend data.",
"version": "1.0.0",
"remotes": [
{
"type": "streamable-http",
"url": "https://core-api.ternary.app/mcp"
}
]
}
}
]
}{
"servers": [
{
"server": {
"name": "ternary",
"title": "Ternary",
"description": "Ternary technology-spend data.",
"version": "1.0.0",
"remotes": [
{
"type": "streamable-http",
"url": "https://core-api.eu.ternary.app/mcp"
}
]
}
}
]
}Step 3: Verify the connection
Confirm that Ternary appears as an available MCP server and that its tools are enabled.
Try:
Using Ternary, show last month's spend by provider.
Which budgets are at risk?
Show recent cost alerts.
Troubleshooting
Ternary is blocked by organization policy
Ask your Kiro administrator to approve the Ternary MCP server in the organization's registry.
Authentication fails
Check the server URL and clientMetadataUrl. Do not set both clientMetadataUrl and a separate clientId.
No tenants appear
Ask your Ternary administrator to confirm your tenant roles.
See Troubleshooting Ternary MCP for shared issues.
