Cursor

Add Ternary to Cursor desktop.

Before you start

You need:

  • An existing Ternary account
  • Access to at least one Ternary tenant
  • Cursor desktop 3.12.10 or newer

Cursor web and Cursor cloud agents are not currently supported.

Step 1: Add Ternary to Cursor

  1. Open Cursor desktop.
  2. Open Cursor Settings.
    • macOS: Cursor → Settings → Cursor Settings
    • Windows: File → Preferences → Cursor Settings
  3. Go to Tools & MCP.
  4. Select New MCP server, or open mcp.json if you already have MCP servers configured.

Cursor stores this configuration in a file:

  • Every project: ~/.cursor/mcp.json in your home folder
  • This project only: .cursor/mcp.json in the project folder

If the file does not exist yet, Cursor creates it when you add a server. If it already has other MCP servers, add the "ternary" block inside "mcpServers" instead of replacing the whole file.

Paste the configuration for the region where your Ternary tenant is hosted:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ternary": {
      "url": "https://core-api.ternary.app/mcp",
      "auth": {
        "CLIENT_ID": "https://core-api.ternary.app/oauth/client-metadata.json"
      }
    }
  }
}

Save the file. The client ID stays the same for US and EU. Do not add a client secret.

Step 2: Sign in

After you save the file, go back to Tools & MCP and start the Ternary server if Cursor has not already prompted you.

Cursor opens Ternary in your browser.

  1. Sign in with your normal Ternary credentials.
  2. Approve the access request.
  3. Return to Cursor.

Because Cursor cannot identify itself through the same discovery path as some other clients, the Ternary approval page may identify the requester as an IDE coding agent and show a local address.

Approve the request only if you initiated the connection yourself.

Step 3: Verify the connection

Confirm that Ternary appears in Cursor's MCP tools and that its tools are enabled.

Then try:

Using Ternary, what did we spend last month by provider?

Which budgets are at risk?

Show recent cost alerts.

Permissions and writes

Every request runs with your existing Ternary permissions.

Most current MCP capabilities are read-only. Creating a private report is the only current write action.

Troubleshooting

Sign-in is refused or shows Unknown client

Check:

  • Cursor is version 3.12.10 or newer
  • The server URL has no trailing slash
  • The client ID is exactly https://core-api.ternary.app/oauth/client-metadata.json
Sign-in loops

Confirm that your Ternary account exists in the region used by the MCP server URL.

No tenants appear

Ask your Ternary administrator to confirm your tenant roles.

See Troubleshooting Ternary MCP for shared issues.
