Claude
Connect Claude on the web or desktop to Ternary MCP with a custom connector and browser OAuth
Connect Claude to Ternary to work with your live technology-spend data directly in a conversation. Once connected, Claude can use Ternary to answer questions about spend, budgets, dashboards, cost alerts, reports, savings recommendations, and AI spend against revenue.
For the Claude Code CLI, use the separate Claude Code setup guide.
Before you start
You need:
- An existing Ternary account
- Access to at least one Ternary tenant
- A Claude account that supports custom connectors
On Team and Enterprise accounts, an administrator may need to enable custom connectors or add the connector for the organization.
Step 1: Add the connector
- In Claude, open Customize.
- Open Connectors.
- Select Add → Add custom connector.
- Fill in the connector details below.
- Leave advanced OAuth client ID and secret fields empty.
- Select Add.
NameTernary
Remote MCP server URL
https://core-api.ternary.app/mcphttps://core-api.eu.ternary.app/mcpUse the server URL exactly as shown, without a trailing slash. Claude discovers Ternary's OAuth configuration automatically.
Step 2: Sign in
Claude opens a Ternary sign-in page in your browser.
- Sign in with your normal Ternary credentials.
- Approve the access request.
- Return to Claude.
Your Ternary account must already exist in the region you selected. The connector then shows as connected. Claude treats Ternary capabilities as read-only except Create report, which saves a report when you ask.
Step 3: Enable Ternary in a conversation
- Start a new conversation.
- Select the + button below the message box.
- Open Connectors.
- Make sure Ternary is enabled.
Then ask:
What did we spend last month, grouped by provider?
Which budgets are at risk or over budget?
What changed on our Executive dashboard?
Show recent cost alerts.
If needed, make the data source explicit:
Using Ternary, show our top five services by spend for last month.
The first time Claude uses a Ternary tool, it asks for permission. You can choose Always allow for reading tools. Claude asks about each tool separately.
Permissions and writes
Claude accesses Ternary as your authenticated Ternary user. It can only retrieve data you already have permission to access.
Most current MCP capabilities read data. Creating a private report is the only current write capability and should only happen when you explicitly ask Claude to save an analysis.
Troubleshooting
Claude cannot reach Ternary
Retry once, then verify:
- The URL includes
/mcp - There is no trailing slash
- You selected the correct region
A first attempt can time out while the service warms up.
Sign-in fails or loops
Your email must belong to an existing Ternary user in the selected region.
US and EU accounts are separate.
No tenants appear
Ask your Ternary administrator to confirm your tenant roles.
Claude does not use Ternary
Make sure the connector is enabled for the current conversation, and phrase the question so it clearly requires Ternary data.
